Anyone who has been in the US Navy knows the term Hold Fast. It’s when you are in a desperate situation and don’t want to lose the last remaining grasp forward progress that you can muster. It’s a cry of resolve and of acknowledgment.
It’s exactly where the neoconservative movement that begun under Richard Nixon and has dominated our politics, both left and right, for the last forty years finds itself. Hold Fast to our base – Wall Street and the Rapture Right. That is why they picked Sarah Palin. That was a pick to shore up the lackluster Social Issues crowd. Palin’s “record” and “resume” as a “reformer” is well documented. No need to delve into her personal life when her professional one is the gift that keeps on giving for Barack.
Until she “withdraws” for “family” reasons in October in the neocon’s last ditch gamble to avoid a 50-State blowout in November. McCain-Whomever (my bet is Leiberman) still loses by 15 points, but they Hold Fast.
So what does that mean for the democratic party? It means they have an opportunity to live up their marketing and be the Party of the People for the first time in a long time. This is an FDR moment when the country is ready for (and desperately needs) drastic change and will embrace a leader who can deliver on it. We are Holding Fast too.
This is the moment when a democratic Ronald Reagan can capture a huge slice of the republican vote and point us a new, more progressive direction.
Barack embodies the best of both parties. He understands that the best way to achieve our common goals is evolution instead of revolution. We don’t have enough time to build this again from the ground up. We have to work within the existing system. Lockheed Martin make solar panels and develop technology for a more responsive health care system under a Barack Obama administration.
Common sense solutions for a country on the brink of catastrophe.
The neoconservatives understand that they have pushed this country as far as it will go. They will keep the 23% Rapture Right vote and the 12% Rich Motherfucker vote, but the rest is going to Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Every republican I know is voting for him. My buddy from the Navy. My MBA best friend. My middle class sister and brother in law. Barack will govern with a majority of democrats, republicans and independents.
They 50-State victory arrives in 2012 after we actually turn this country into the America every real American knows it can be.
Hold Fast.
Sorry for the typos. My kingdom for a real website. Come on TPM! We give you our eyeballs which drives your revenue. The least you could do is provide modern technology and a robust social environment. This site is Mickey Mouse. Seriously.
Jason, I put up a page of tips this morning about how to use this website. Perhaps you didn’t read it? (Probably not, since multiple identical posts from other posters pushed my post off this list in about ten minutes.) The “problems” you claim to be having are actually features. TPM has the Best. Message. Board. Ever.
Great post. Rec’d.
I enjoyed your post very much. And I needed it. I’ve really let this Palin rollercoaster get me down.
Thanks for the kind words, Jane. I think it is important to look at things from 10,000 feet sometimes.
I admire your enthusiasm and enjoy reading your views, Jason.
I hope your prediction is right. Our country sorely needs this right now.
Thanks, Laura. I guess I believe in a Create Your Reality paradigm that doesn’t seem to be too affected by the machinations of people.
With so many of us focused on change this year, I don’t think the GOP’s Faux Change will qualify. As you said, our country sorely needs this right now and I don’t think you are alone in that feeling.
In fact, I don’t believe we will survive a McCain administration. Literally.
I like your post as well, because it is often impossible to have any sense of optimism when I look around me at an economic crash and illegal wars and torture in our names.
It will be strange, but liberating, to hear Obama give the State of the Union address. It will be the first one I have heard from an ordinary American in what seems like forever….
I can’t help but be optimistic because otherwise would be madness. I certainly wouldn’t be able to bring kids into this world if I thought that it couldn’t be changed. I guess the very fact Obama exists and has won the democratic nomination tells me that optimism is justify this year.
I, too, can’t wait to hear that speech. It is going to be a doozy, even if we don’t particular care for what he tells us – which will most likely involve a lot of shared sacrifice and personal accountability. Americans have not been held accountable for much too long.
60 days left folks.
We need to be more determined than ever.
Fight, fight, fight until Nov. 4th.
I thought I was the only one that believed Barack, if he governs even SOMEWHAT affectively, will win by a wider margin in 2012 than he will in 2008. I believe we have our Democratic Reagen, someone who will redraw the map for the next generation to come.

He’s more like a modern day FDR, thanks for the hope. It seemed to have been slipping away.
He’s totally Teddy by way of FDR. Reagan was really the only modern comparison I could make in terms of being a “change” candidate.
To paraphrase Harry Truman … Given a choice between Change and Change, the voters will choose Change every time.
I think they will choose Change over Change™ every time.
Such a good post. I was over at HuffPo and I couldn’t believe all of the surrender monkeys over there! “Boo hoo. We’re sooooo scared of Miss Wasilia.” She is nothing more than a distraction. A last ditch attempt by a dying party bereft of ideas to recapture the spotlight. While McCane makes a desperate tack towards the far right, Obama and Biden are doing exactly what they should be doing. Fighting back and sticking to the issues that matter to the American people! KEEP FIGHTING DEMS! MAKE IT HAPPEN! Until the last poll closes on November 4th! It’s going to be a landslide victory for Obama/Biden.
